Taragiri frigate delivered to Indian Navy under Project 17A
MumbaiTaragiri, the fourth Nilgiri Class (Project 17A) advanced stealth frigate, has been delivered to the Indian Navy on 28 November 2025 in Mumbai. The vessel, identified as Yard 12653, is the third Project 17A ship constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd (MDL) and is part of a programme aimed at enhancing indigenous warship design and construction capabilities.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Defence said the Project 17A frigates are designed as multi-mission platforms intended to address current and emerging maritime challenges. The ship is a reincarnation of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class frigate that served in the Indian Navy for 33 years until 2013.
Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai, the Project 17A class incorporates advances in stealth, survivability and weapons integration. The Ministry stated that the vessels are built using the Integrated Construction methodology to meet delivery timelines.
The frigate features a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, comprising a diesel engine and a gas turbine driving a controllable pitch propeller on each shaft. The ship is equipped with an Integrated Platform Management System that supports automation and platform control functions.
Taragiri carries an advanced weapons and sensor suite that includes BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, the MFSTAR radar, the medium-range surface-to-air missile system, a 76 mm gun, and 30 mm and 12.7 mm close-in weapon systems. For anti-submarine warfare, the vessel is fitted with rockets and torpedoes.
According to the statement, Taragiri is the fourth Project 17A ship delivered in 11 months. The construction period for the vessel was reduced to 81 months, compared with 93 months for the first ship of the class, Nilgiri. The remaining three Project 17A ships—one at MDL and two at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers—are scheduled for delivery by August 2026.
The Ministry said the project has an indigenisation content of 75 percent and involves more than 200 micro, small and medium enterprises. Approximately 4,000 personnel have been employed directly and more than 10,000 indirectly through the programme. On Date:
