New Noida International Airport Expected to Expand Supply Chain Capabilities in Northern India
The upcoming Noida International Airport (Jewar Airport) in Uttar Pradesh is anticipated to impact regional and international supply chains with its new cargo and passenger infrastructure. The first phase of the airport, featuring a single runway and one terminal, is projected to accommodate 12 million passengers annually, while the planned fourth phase will expand this capacity to 70 million passengers. Additionally, the airport is committed to a net-zero emissions goal.
Key expected benefits for supply chain operations include improved air cargo handling, connectivity, and transportation efficiency. Jewar Airport is set to offer advanced cargo handling facilities, supporting faster movement of goods such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products. This infrastructure is expected to aid industries by expediting imports of raw materials and exports of finished products, particularly for the electronics, automotive, and manufacturing sectors clustered around Noida and Greater Noida.
Jewar Airport is expected to relieve air traffic congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi by sharing the region’s air cargo load. This redistribution aims to decrease cargo turnaround times and reduce delays associated with congestion at Delhi’s primary airport.
In terms of logistics integration, plans include connecting Jewar Airport to road and rail networks, potentially streamlining goods transportation across India. The airport’s location may also provide an additional export option for businesses in northern India, particularly those currently dependent on ports in Mumbai and Gujarat.
The airport’s development is projected to create a significant number of jobs across logistics, aviation, warehousing, and freight forwarding sectors. Additionally, the facility is expected to enhance the e-commerce logistics sector, enabling quicker delivery times and more reliable fulfillment services, which could benefit India’s growing online retail market.
